“And that’s good,” Dr. Lane said. “Because bats are important little creatures. Little brown bats like this one eat a lot of mosquitos and other insects. That means farmers don’t have to use so many pesticides. And fruit-eating bats help to spread seeds and pollinate flowers.”

Dr. Lane told the group that some types of bats are endangered. “We can help them by making our yards more bat-friendly,” she said.

Before she left, she told the girls that they could paint the bat house if they wanted to. And she suggested they hang it on the outside of the barn. “At least ten or fifteen feet off the ground,” Dr. Lane said.
